Cornwall's Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs)
At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the UK Government
was one of almost 150 countries that signed the Convention
on Biological Diversity. In 1995 they published Biodiversity:
the UK Action Plan, an ambitious document that listed national
habitats and species of conservation concern, with detailed
objectives to help protect and enhance them.
Cornwall was one of the first counties in the UK to adopt
this action plan approach. In 1997 the CBI produced “Cornwall’s
Biodiversity: Volume 1 Audit and Priorities”, identifying
areas and species of conservation concern within the county.
1998’s publication “Cornwall’s Biodiversity:
Volume 2 Action Plans” identified locally important
species and habitats – together with objectives and
targets to help conserve them.
The CBI’s latest publication is “Cornwall’s
Biodiversity: Volume 3 Action Plans 2004”. This publication
completes the Cornwall Biodiversity Action Plan for Cornwall
by including all UK BAP Priority Habitats and Species that
occur in Cornwall.
